August is Black Philanthropy Month, and a new, local research project highlights the many ways Black donors contribute to the wellbeing of their communities in the region.

The Giving Black Hampton Roads study, commissioned by the Hampton Roads Community Foundation, found that:

• 98% of Black donors reported giving during the past 12 months
• 15% reported giving $10,000 or more last year
• More than 40 percent have an annual household income of $120,000 or above

“Black philanthropy is the economic engine which powers and empowers our community — sustaining social, business, educational, and religious institutions all while supporting friends and families in need,” said Vivian Oden, vice president for equity and inclusion at the community foundation. “Too often it has been overlooked and misunderstood. This project sheds light on the notable giving patterns of Black donors.”

The study was conducted in partnership with New England Blacks in Philanthropy, whose president Bithiah Carter will serve as a panelist for the Aug. 12 event. She and other experts will answer audience questions and provide tips to local organizations on ways to engage Black donors.

This is the fourth annual Black Philanthropy Month event sponsored by the community foundation. The global celebration began in 2011 to strengthen African American and African descent giving.

The Hampton Roads Community Foundation is southeastern Virginia’s largest grant and scholarship provider. Since 1950, it has awarded more than $324 million in grants and scholarships to make life better in Hampton Roads.
